How To Achieve Freedom From All The "Shoulds" In Your Life

If you are tuned into your "inner task master voice" I think you likely know how many times a day you hear the phrase "I should...". If not take a day out of your life and tune into this and I think you'll recognize that you are indeed enslaved by something that feels other than desirable.

Why do I say "enslaved"?

Well because if you look at the experience of having to follow that voice it likely makes you feel trapped, frustrated, depleted, controlled, guilty, undeserving, tense, under scrutiny, and like your life does not fully belong to you.

Well isn't it your life after all? You might like to think so however given the experience I've just taken you through it appears to be under the control of this inner task master.

So are you free? Well that depends on the definition of the word "freedom". Here's my definition.

To be free means that every thought, feeling, behavior and decision in one's life comes from a place of "desire". In other words rather than the "I should" voice driving one's life the "I want" voice" is in charge.

If you look at the experience of each of these I think you'll feel the difference between them.

Doesn't "I should" feel like it is coming from somewhere other than you. In other words it is coming from "outside" of your experience of "you"? Yes I know that you will likely say that it is coming from within your head but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is coming from you. More about this in a moment.

The experience of "I want" however will likely feel like it "is" coming from you. That is because it feels like you are in charge and the master of your destiny in this case.

So how can it be that one can even have an experience of an "I should" inside one's self if it is not coming from that individual?

Well it simply means that there is something inside of you that is foreign to you yet occupies space in your mind and body and has usurped control of your life away from you.

How is this possible?

Well have you ever had a computer virus do something like this to your computer? You see the same thing is happening in your case.

You have over the course of your life "allowed" yourself to "absorb" many "emotional viruses" that are now inside of you at an unconscious and preconscious level and which disguise themselves as you and thereby take over control of your life.

Are you happy with that situation? I highly doubt it.

However now that you are aware of it you might feel strangely more empowered. That is because the awareness of your situation is indeed more empowering than being unconscious of such enslavement.

Up until now you like others have entertained the idea that such "inner voices" were a normal part of you. Well they're not. When you recognize and accept that you will begin the process of freeing yourself from them and fully reclaiming mastery over your own life.

Now, for a moment, reflect on such issues as self esteem, self confidence, self worth, happiness, fulfillment, inner peace, success and so on.

I think you'll immediately see that you can have none of these if you are allowing yourself to be controlled by something foreign to you which has an agenda that is about stealing your life energy away from you.
