Bad English and the Internet-You are vistos number 100!

Its really amazing the huge number of websites in English you see every day where glaring and jaw-dropping grammatical errors turn people off and make them run to the next website. I have seen "credit card" spelled "credid cart", "foreign" (as in foreign exchange) spelled "foreing" and "visitors" spelled "vistos" and so on. It is very uncommon to run into a site without at least a couple of errors.

And I am not even talking about syntax, sentence structure and all that other stuff. I am referring to straight forward mistakes where words are grossly misspelled and splattered on the home page of a website for people to see. And while it is true that many of those sites are translated into English by non-English speakers or written by folks who have a tenuous command of English, it is also true that if I decide that I want a website in, say, French for whatever purpose, I will make sure that someone who is really fluent in that language will review the site first and help me with at least the grammar. To me such disregard is a sign of carelessness and I am pretty sure a lot of other folks feel the same way.

Sure enough there are people out there who couldn't care less if they are asked for their "credid cart" or told that they are "vistos" number 100. I for one feel somewhat uncomfortable trusting someone whom I consider to be careless and who doesn't pay enough attention to the product they put out there. To me it shows lack of attention to detail and while in many cases I don't mind because it is so common and I don't expect the World Wide Web to be Harvard Graduate School of Education, in others I just wince and go on my merry way to the next great online business opportunity or the next opportunity to improve whatever little writing skills I have so I can try and avoid Bad English.
