Dot-com Startups and the 10 Second Internet Person

Some people do not understand the idea of online commerce, but then again some people do not understand themselves, either. To grasp such concepts, you really only need to monitor your clicking habits for a few days. Notice where your surfing habits take you; and what, if anything, you are buying. The modern Internet Consumer is there and gone, in a click of an eye. If you don't grab us immediately with good stuff, SEE YA, we are out of here at the speed of light.

The good news is, you can make money on this fact -- and Google AdSense is just one way. If you've been thinking about employing one of the myriad opportunities for income on the internet, I recommend getting an instant education, with: The 10 Second Internet Manager: Survive, Thrive & Drive Your Company in the Information Age By Mark Breier.

Mark Breier is one of the key people behind Amazon.com, an early dot-com that won. Why did they win? Because Mark and his team were relentless. Other examples of winners: Armin A. Brott, co-author and former Marine, Commodities Trader and MBA; the Blitz Marketing Team at CarWashGuys.com. These marketers are all slightly insane, just like the modern day Internet Person. It appears that's what it takes; hard-core crazy internet guys willing to go the distance in the deployment of their market dominating campaigns. So if you're thinking of doing the dot-com thing, you may want to pick up a copy of Mark Breier's book to kick things off in the right direction.

Overview of The 10 Second Internet Manager: Survive, Thrive & Drive Your Company in the Information Age

The 10 Second Internet Manager" delivers an info-packed punch that's sure have info-hungry marketers salivating for more. Real-world issues like outwitting the competition, tactics that move mountains, how to deal with high-strung, ego-driven personalities with a penchant for kicking butt... it's all covered in Breier's book. If every dot-com CEO would have taken the mere five hours needed to digest this information, fewer would be gone today.

In this book, Mark speaks of integral team concepts such as maintaining balance, fun on the team and winning. He cites the venture capital game, investment banker group and all the people it takes to please the crowd. He covers an in-depth evaluation of customer feedback and sales in the e-commerce world. He gives great advice for managing e-mail, electronic communication, when not to have a meeting, when to get a life, when to ask for more, when and how far to push the troops, what to say to the media, investors, VC, and investment bankers. He reveals the ways in which investment bankers use your information on other projects and why it's important to make deals fast. He'll tell you why loose lips sink ships.

My personal reaction to this book:

I recommend the book to everyone, but feel that some companies are even more dedicated to winning than they were at Amazon.com. I could have done without some of the whining that I picked up in the pages of this book. I thought that some of the hard work complaints were invalid because that is what it takes and that's life. If you can't cope, get out of the fire; only the strong survive. I got the feeling that some of these guys at Amazon were yuppy pricks and wimps on the fire line; but their way worked for them, so hats off to their team. We work that hard everyday at my company and you probably do, too. They did it using other people's money, big deal. But no matter what you or I think, they did do it indeed. Fact is, if it were that tough on them and not worth it, they wouldn't have gone through with it in the first place. But even through the bellyaching, they asked for it, they got it and they persevered. When all was said and done, these guys were willing to pull though on their commitments to the shareholders and drive hard at the market.

All in all this book was a good read. I could not agree more with 80% of its content, with respect to general marketing practice and principle. The other 20% was information only important to a dot-com or to Amazon itself... but if you're buying strictly to get in on the dot-com action, then it's likely just what you're looking for. Some of the stories did an excellent job of making their point, and painted a clear picture of real life on the inside at this fast paced company. Next on the reading list is Amazon.com, the story of the bookseller itself.

I recommend Mark Breier's The 10 Second Internet Manager" to anyone sitting on their butt and wondering what it takes to survive and to win in the age of the Internet. It is fun to win, but the stakes are high... and only a few can actually do it. So buy it, read it and think on it, thanks, click out to your right on one of the side bar items. SEE YA.
